Urban Decay 'Naked Smoky' Review (+ Swatches)

Dino's Beauty Diary - Urban Decay Smoky Palette Review and Swatches

*Insert a million heart eyed emojis here*

Isn't this new release by Urban Decay beautiful?! Ever since Urban Decay announced they were bringing out a new palette in the 'Naked' range, I've been as excited as a kid at Christmas. The 'Smoky' palette has been one of those products that everyone has been waiting for - so much so that the Urban Decay website sold out for a little while!

With it's smoky like packaging, the 'Naked Smoky' palette immediately draws the eye and looks very high end. The case itself is sturdy plastic, unlike the Naked 3 which was in a tin, with bold silver writing which looks gorgeous when it catches the light, aswell as a full sized mirror and soft eyeshadow brush inside. Unlike the Naked 3 which came with a travel size UD eye primer, the Smoky palette comes with a mini leaflet on how to create certain smoky eye looks. There are four looks, ranging from an 'everyday smoky' to a 'smoky reality star', and I can't wait to experiment with them!

The eyeshadows in the palette are a gorgeous mixture of matte, satin and shimmery shades which range from light golden shades to deep sultry metals. There are nine never before seen shades, as well as three shades from previous palettes, with a mix of warm and cool tones.

Each shade is well pigmented, whilst a couple of the matte shades are more of a chalky consistency to me. With some of the colours there is quite a bit of fallout when picking up with the brush, but I've found this to be normal with quite a few brands. I'm amazed with the amount of looks that can be created with this palette - you can create a variety of daytime looks suitable for work, or stunning deep night time looks perfect for the dancefloor.

High - A warm toned shade with a gorgeous shimmer, this is one of the shades I've used the most for my eyelids, combined with both Dirtysweet and Radar. The pigmentation of this shade is excellent; unlike other shades where I have to layer the colour up, with this one it only needs a small amount of product. The shade is quite high on fallout though, and that's its only downside.

Dirtysweet - A gorgeous medium bronze shade, I tend to use this on the outer corner of my eyes and blended into the crease a bit with Radar. Again, the pigmentation is fantastic and its a perfect shade for daytime use.

Radar  - This shade is perfect for the crease of the eyelid, and is more of a brown/bronze mix. It has a lovely metallic finish and I find that it really makes the eyes stand out.

Armor - A gorgeous dark grey metallic shade, this would be perfect to create a good night time look that really makes the eyes pop. It has a slight glimmer to it, and would look perfect in the crease of the eye.

Slanted - A light metallic grey, this has a gorgeous satin finish. The pigmentation is great again, and there's not too much fallout.

Dagger - To me this looks like a cool blue/grey colour, but it hasn't been picked up well in the swatch. Again this has a satin finish and hardly any fallout.

Black Market - A jet black shade, I'm not sure if I could ever pull this off unless I'm feeling especially daring! It has a gorgeous satin finish but I'm not sure this would get a lot of use from me.

Smolder - A very warm tone, I think this shade is one of my favourites as it has a soft plum kind of look to it.

Password - A cool taupe shade, this is the first matte in the palette. I found that it was quite hard to build up; not impossible, but it takes a bit of patience.

Whiskey - Another matte shade, this is a nice rich brown. Again it took some building up once on the eye.

Combust - Again, a matte shade, which is a soft, rich taupe. This one was very difficult to build up and blend, so I haven't used it very much.

Thirteen - The last shadow, this is described as a 'light beige satin' on the Urban Decay website. However it just looks like a white shadow to me, and I tend to use this more as a highlighter for the brow bone.

Altogether, I can see why this product had a lot of hype around it before it was released. It is, in one word, stunning. Whilst theres a couple of shades that I struggle with regarding pigmentation, I'm sure I will use all of them at some point. I'd say it is worth the steep price of £38 as the pigmentation of most of the shades is fantastic, and it works out at around £3 a shade, which is cheaper than buying some individually at £14. You can get the Smoky palette online here, or from Debenhams and Selfridges stores.
