What You NEED To Know About: Skincare - The Basics

Dino's Beauty Diary - What You Need To Know About Skincare: The Basics

These days, I can't walk down a skincare aisle in a store anymore without being overwhelmed with choice. From toners to moisturisers, cleansing milks to hot cloth cleansers, we're completely spoilt for choice. But how are we to know what products are best suited for us with such a wide selection?

If you're like me, and the wide selection of items on offer completely baffles you, then look no further! With my job I have learnt pretty much all there is to know about skincare, and since then my regime has been revolutionised. And now I'm here to share all there is to be known with you guys - hip hip, hooray!

Dino's Beauty Diary - What You Need To Know About Skincare: The Basics

So, where do we begin? In most skincare regimes, there are 4 simple steps:
   - Cleansing
   - Toner/Freshener
   - Moisturisers
   - Extras

1. Cleansing:
Cleansers are designed to sweep away make-up, dirt and any impurities. They dissolve the make-up and dirt, and bring out any impurities and deep seated grime. Cleansers help to unclog the pores and prevent skin conditions, such as acne.

2. Toner/Freshener:
Toners freshen the skin and remove any remaining traces of cleanser. Most of them contain cooling ingredients, which tightens the pores. They also contain light cleansing ingredients which help to sweep away any cleanser residue, and any make-up traces left behind.

3. Moisturisers:
Moisturisers replace any moisture lost from the skin, whilst also adding extra moisture which helps to maintain the suppleness and softness of the skin. The ingredients in moisturisers hydrate the skin and form a kind of 'film' to prevent further moisture loss.
Most day moisturisers contain sunscreens and/or anti-oxidants to protect the skin from any environmental damage. Yet in contrast, night moisturisers are much richer and intensive, and are designed to work as you sleep. At night our skin nourishes and restores itself, hence why we need a richer, more intensive cream at night.

4. Extras:
Extras are not essential, but are rather used to support a good skincare regime. They are designed more to target and treat specific areas of need and concern (such as eye creams etc). There are a variety of products available including anti-aging serums, face masks etc.

Each of these steps is essential to maintaining bright and youthful looking skin. For me, gone are the days of simply slapping on a bit of cream before bed and praying for the best. Gone are the days of wiping off my makeup with a simple face wipe (beauty blogger sin number 1 I know). Nowadays, I have a clear regime to complete before I head off to bed: Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise!

I hope this little basics overview has been helpful for you all, and I'm considering doing more detailed posts in the future. Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in reading! :)

Such a great post, I love how you've broken down each step! You have an impressive selection of skincare treats :) I'd say serum is an essential step as it provides moisture to deeper layers of the skin, whereas moisturiser just works at the protective/top layer :)
