For some bizarre reason, I thought it would be a great idea for me any my other half to go see 'Fifty Shades of Grey' at the cinema for Valentines Day. With so much hype surrounding the film and it's so called 'pushing the boundaries', I figured it would be interesting to check out what all the fuss was about.

Now I have to say, my feelings on this film aren't exactly great. I couldn't even get halfway through the book without throwing it across the room in anger and boredom, so I have no idea why my expectations for the film were any different. I don't know what I expected from something that originates from Twilight fan fiction, but the writing was enough to make my eyes feel like they were bleeding. It is honestly an insult to literature everywhere. Okay, rant over and back to the film I promise...

In my opinion, the film had a lot more promise than the books - thanks to the directing of Sam Taylor-Johnson (one of the only people who could have made the series bearable). Personally, I feel a lot more could have been done to make the characters feel a lot more believable and therefore make the story a heck of a lot easier flowing. But if rumours are true, then there were a few clashes between Sam and the author, who didn't want any of her story changing. Seriously woman, I'm sorry but you could use all the help you can get.

Moaning aside, I loved the casting of the two leads - Anastasia and Christian. Jamie Dornan has that whole sexy, mysterious thing going for him, and Dakota Johnson shows a lot of promise in her big debut - even though she is limited within her character. Within about five minutes me and my other half had bets on how long it would take before Anastasia bit her lip again - it's predictable, distracting, annoying and is so blatant it feels wrong, I'm sorry.

The plot moves along at quite a slow burn - most of the film seems to be the big question of if Ana will sign the contract and allow Christian to take control. Now, everyone knows the main premise of the film - the whole BDSM side of things. I don't have a problem with this - what I do have a problem with is Christian trying to exercise control outside of the bedroom and very much all throughout Ana's life, such as her eating. He even turns up unannounced when she goes home to visit her mother for a weekend! The whole thing made me feel slightly uncomfortable, and it just seemed too possessive and controlling.

The ending for me was one of the most decent parts of the film. When Ana realises how deep Christian's interests go she gets scared - and the film ends exactly how their first meeting starts. It's an interesting dynamic to mirror the beginning and the end of the relationship and show how the emotions differ (from initial nerves at the beginning to sadness in the end). Ending with the name 'Christian', I felt the film was left on the perfect note and open for the next film. However, I feel that if the film were to end on Ana's safe word 'Red', it would have been more emotionally significant for her character.

On a different and happier note, I have to praise the films wardrobe. Christian's suits we're gorgeous and really amped up his sex appeal - give me a man in a suit any day! ;) Another bonus for me was the soundtrack - in particular the remix of 'Crazy in Love' and 'Love Me Like You Do'. Although sadly for me, they seem to be the only things I really enjoyed about the film.

Overall, I'd give the film 2 stars out of 5, and even then I feel like I'm being generous. There were a couple of moments in the film I actually enjoyed (such as flying the plane and the ending). Sadly, as Sam Taylor-Johnson is rumored to be out of the sequels, I can't say I'll be in any hurry to line up for the next film.
