TV Review | The Walking Dead S05E04: 'Slabtown'

Dino's Beauty Diary - The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 4 Slabtown TV Review

On last weeks The Walking Dead we were left on a cliffhanger, with Daryl returning to the group and asking someone to come out when asked where Carol was. The internet has been steadily growing with ideas, from it being Carol or Beth, to a completely new character who somehow managed to find our favourite hero. With that, I couldn't wait until this weeks episode - we finally get a look at where Beth has been, and we may even find out who was lurking in the woods!

Warning: Spoilers ahead for 'Slabtown'.
If you haven't watched it yet, I advise against reading ahead.

As the episode starts, we're given a quick refresh of the last time we saw Beth. On top of this, we're given Daryl's voice over and even a little question from Maggie back when they were captives at Terminus. Apart from that, I've not heard her ask once about her sister, and even then she doesn't sound as excited at the prospect as what she was with Glenn. Does Maggie just think her sister is hopeless or something and therefore not worth her attention?

She's just gone.

Beth wakes up in a scarily pristine room for a world that's gone to hell, shown by the state of a city outside her window. She soon starts banging on the door to be let out before pulling out her IV to use as some sort of defence before a Doctor and Police woman come through the door, telling her everything's okay. Introducing: Doctor Steven Edwards and Officer Dawn Lerner. Beth is soon informed that she is in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and that she was rescued by more officers when they found her surrounded by 'rotters', and she has a few wounds that are still healing. She looks sad before asking if Daryl is with her too, to which Dawn replies they rescued only her. And then even more chillingly informs Beth that she 'owes' them.

Edwards soon shows Beth another person they 'rescued', but who is in a much worse state than Beth. He soon switches the life support off, informing Beth that Dawn makes the decisions before permanently killing the man and stopping him turning.

The situation in the hospital is something different than experienced before in TWD world; everyone seems to work, and everyone seems to be paying off some sort of debt. The hospital has been kept in pretty much working condition, except for a spine tingling looking elevator shaft which is used as a makeshift body dumping shute. Potential escape route number 1 perhaps?

In the canteen another officer approaches Beth, telling her his name is 'Gorman'. From his actions, you can clearly tell he has darker thoughts towards Beth and that she should definitely keep her eye on him and away from him. He actually gave me the shudders!

Beth goes to Edwards' office, where he tells her he's suffering from boredom. She quickly remarks that as he feels safe enough to feel bored, then he's truly lucky before he tucks into a lunch of Guinea Pig. Beth is reluctant to eat, feeling the more she takes, the more she will owe - and in turn be stuck at the hospital longer.

A new patient comes in and one of the officers remarks something unheard to Dawn, whilst Edwards is ready to write him off as they've already 'wasted' enough resources. Dawn however is eager for Edwards to save the man, and he quickly sets about it with help from Beth. He still remarks that it's a waste of resources, causing Dawn to lash out at Beth and rip the stitches on her cheeks open.

After being told to change, Beth finds a lollipop in her outfit and finally manages to smile. Not for long though, as a girl who tried to escape is brought back in with a bite to her arm. Edwards gives her an anesthetic before brutally cutting through her arm with some wire, forcing Beth to hold her down. The contrasting sounds of the sawing and the girls screams are shocking, and clearly Beth thinks so too by the horror on her face.

Beth yet again needs new scrubs, and is finally introduced to Noah who seems to be her only friend in the hospital. She asks him about leaving, to which he tells her he's been there over a year and hasn't seen anyone pay off their 'debt' and just leave yet. He also tells her that his Dad was bigger and stronger, so they left him behind on purpose to die as he would have fought back. It seems to be a recurring theme that the people in the hospital think Beth is weak and unable to defend herself - they clearly don't know the group of survivors she came from before.

Dawn talks to Beth, and in some twisted way you can see the logic behind what she is doing. She somehow still has some bizarre thought that the world will go back to how it was - even though it's been a year now in TWD world right? Later on Beth is around when Joan wakes up, and Joan tells her that Dawn is a coward and won't control the other officers because it's 'easier'.

Gorman later tries it on with Beth, in a frankly disturbing scene with a lollipop. Edwards stands up to him to defend Beth, but later backs down before showing Beth the outside of the hospital littered with walkers. He also tells her that they're 'not the kind of people that make it', before asking her to give the newest patient some Clozapine, which unfortunately ends up killing him.

Dawn angrily confronts Beth and Noah, with Noah taking the blame and recieving a brutal beating. Beth tells Edwards, who insists he told her to give him Clonazepam. Uh-oh, I smell a rat. Dawn confronts Beth about Noah lying, telling her everything they do is for the greater good, and that isn't Beth. She even confronts Beth about her self harming, telling her that some people 'aren't meant for this life'. Harsh words Dawn, you clearly have no idea how far Beth has come.

Beth and Noah make plans to escape, deciding the quickest route would be the elevator shaft and to get the spare key from Dawn's office. Beth manages to get in unnoticed, where she finds an unconscious/dead Joan and someones wallet in a filing cabinet. As she finds the key, she is caught by Gorman and he tries to offer his silence in exchange for some other favours. Ew. She sees Joan moving (now a zombie), before smashing Gorman over the head with a jar and promptly getting his throat torn out by the now zombified Joan. You go girl!

Making their escape, the duo head to the shaft with what can only be described as having a walker buffet waiting at the bottom. All the disposed of bodies end up in a disgusting, rotting pile and Noah accidentally falls down and injures his leg as they jump into the pit.

Now this is what amazes me; their noises attracted a lot of walkers, and here Beth proves she's anything but weak. She manages to headshot walkers left, right and centre with a gun she stole off Gorman's body, and boy does she look like a force to be reckoned with.

Outside numerous walkers approach them, and Beth rather handily stomps ones brains out as Noah takes the lead. The rest of the officers from the hospital soon swoop in and capture Beth, forcing Noah to leave without her. Back inside, Beth seems to have got the lady balls to stand up to Dawn and tell her what is happening inside the corrupt hospital. The truth seems to pee Dawn off, and she smashes Beth over the face with a photo frame.

Beth confronts Edwards about the patient she killed, telling him she knows the man was a Doctor (from his wallet she found earlier) and therefore a threat to Edwards' place in the hospital. Grabbing a pair of scissors Edwards' left on the side when he was patching her up, she braces herself to kill him and make a second escape from the hospital. Then something happens to stop her in her tracks; a stretcher is brought in with a new patient, and it's none other than...Carol!

Is it part of a plan to break Beth out from the inside and Carol's faking, or is she genuinely injured? All I know is it's going to be another couple of weeks until we find out - next weeks episode seems to be focused on Abraham and his group!

Next time on TWD: It seems like next week is all about Abraham, Eugene, Rosita, Tara, Glenn and Maggie. By the sounds of it, some of them want to go back to Rick and everyone but Abraham is stern and tells them there's no going back. A lot of zombie killing seems to be going on (obviously) and there may potentially be some tension in the group. What's most noticable is that towards the end of the clip, we see Abraham looking like he's close to tears and then he collapses in the middle of the road. What could have happened? Maybe something to Rosita or Eugene?

Annoying character of the week: Edwards, for being a bit of a wimp.

At least we know Beth is somewhat safe for now! Rumour has it there's going to be a main character die in the mid season finale - which I estimate will be back around when we get to Beth's character again. In my mind, killing Beth seems to be what everyone thinks is going to happen and is too obvious - my money is on Carol. Maybe. Who knows? What are your thoughts?

P.S. My review of E05 may be late (I may post 5 & 6 simultaneously) as I'm off to Paris for a week this weekend, hooray!
