TV Review | The Walking Dead S05E01: 'No Sanctuary'

Dino's Beauty Diary - The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1 No Sanctuary Review

Hallelujah, ITS BACK. Yes it's that time of year again when AMC's 'The Walking Dead' graces our screens again. For months now I've been waiting for this moment, stalking twitter feeds and constantly googling TWD for any insight or dare I say it, spoiler, into what has become of our beloved characters.

Like what's become of Rick, Glenn and everyone imprisoned at the end of season 4? What about Carol and Tyreese after that shocking episode 'The Grove'? I have to say now, that was one of the most emotionally draining episodes I've ever seen on television. It was heartbreaking. However, I have to say that the question that's been bugging me the most is what happened to Beth?

The last time we saw her in season 4, there was an emotionally charged scene between her and Daryl that had me on the edge of my seat - but before you know it, those damn walkers have to go and ruin it all! The next inkling we have of Beth is a ominous looking black car driving away from the scene, leaving her backpack behind to suggest some kind of struggle. Later on when Daryl is reunited with Rick, he explains quite emotionally (well, it seemed like that to me anyway) that she was 'just gone'. *Sob*.

I'm hoping Beth doesn't meet her end this season, as I'm really starting to warm to her character. But let's face it, everyone (apart from Daryl, Rick and unfortunately Carl) is expendable in the walking dead world. Rick and Carl are the main driving force behind the series, which just winds me up as Carl is the biggest pain in the butt and most annoying character I've ever had the misfortune of seeing on my screen (rant over I swear). And Daryl is obviously the fan favourite, so I don't see the writers killing him off for fear of a riot (and I'll be on the front line if that happens I assure you).

So, let's jump into what happens in Season 5 episode 1, entitled 'No Sanctuary'.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for 'No Sanctuary'.
If you haven't yet watched it, I advise against reading ahead!!

The episode starts with a look back at the people who captured Rick & co., seeing them subject to the same thing they inflict upon the prison group. A few of the group talk about how they were being 'good people' in putting up the signs, but that it brought 'them' here, whilst screams echo around them. It's interesting that we're given a bit of a back story of the people at Terminus, and I can't help but draw similar lines between them and Rick's group. After all, they started off being 'good people' at first, but soon changed into something else. Rick did after all drive off before, leaving a solo survivor to meet his fate with the walkers before coming back later on to scavenge his supplies.

Jumping back to the present, the group trapped in the cart gear up to fight their captors whilst catching up since the prisons fallout. Unfortunately they're outsmarted, and tear gas is dropped in on them from above. Sneaky. We're treated to the sight through Rick's eyes, and believe me it's not a pleasant one! Two men are slicing up a body in the corner whilst Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Bob and a number of other new characters are lined up in front of a pig troth style thing, execution style.

Noticably (for me anyway, my boyfriend just looked confused) one of the men was Sam, the guy Rick and Carol came across in season 4's episode 'Indifference'. You remember him right? Him and his girlfriend, Ana, both seemed hopeless as survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Which was confirmed when Rick and Carol later found Ana's body being devoured, and no sign of Sam - we all pretty much presumed he met the same fate. Apparently not!

Anyway, the 3 unknown characters and poor Sam do meet a pretty gruesome fate - they're hit over the head with a metal baseball bat before having their throats cut. Nice. Obviously as it gets to the main characters they're somehow miraculously saved - by a huge explosion from outside. Seems like the first episode of season 5 is having more action than most episodes of Season 2 combined. I'm certainly not complaining!

After the credits we follow Tyreese, Carol and little baby Judith. And for some reason Tyreese now gets all emotional about killing walkers, telling Carol 'I can't.' Not the attitude to have when zombies are hot on your trail man! A herd of walkers is about to descend on them when gunfire distracts the walkers, letting the trio escape and happen upon Martin, a Terminus resident gossiping about the captives via radio with someone else.

Something about Martin bugged me from the start - yes he's a cannibal but that's not what did it. Obviously as the people at Terminus are the antagonists we're not meant to like them, but did Martin really have to smack his chops so much like he was chewing gum badly? I'm assuming there's no more gum in a zombie apocalypse right? He kind of reminds me of Shane - really bloody annoying and you kind of can't wait for him to be killed off.

Carol goes on the offensive and smears herself in walker blood to go and save the others, whilst Tyreese keeps Martin captive and looks after Judith. Martin tries to mentally screw over Tyreese by telling him that him and Judith will die today - have you seen the size of Tyreese, Martin? I'm pretty sure he could break you with one hand.

I for one am not Carol's biggest fan; in fact, most of the characters pee me off at one point or another. But in this episode, she does kind of redeem herself in my eyes. She's quite badass, to put it crudely. She mounts a one-woman war on the residents at Terminus, and they have no idea what's going on. You go girl!

In TWD, we're used to crazy concepts; such as zombies falling from the sky, emerging from the mud etc. In this episode, we're given zombies on fire and believe me, it works. There's even a lovely shot of a burning zombie literally chewing a guys face off. Yummy.

Cutting back to Rick and everyone, Rick manages to cut his way free with a sharp piece of wood he hid up his sleeve, killing the two captors. Even more chillingly, he tells the others to leave them to turn instead of stopping them from reanimating. Trying to find a way out, they happen upon a gore filled room with bits of bodies hanging from the ceiling - confirming that Terminus is home to cannibals. Gulp! As they eventually get outside they see a container being attacked by zombies, to which Glenn remarks they have to help as it's still who they are. There is some good left in the group after all!

Carol meanwhile has managed to blend in with the herd overrunning Terminus, and makes her way into the compound. I always love it when the characters disguise themselves among the zombies - it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you never know when they're going to be discovered. Eventually she finds a room filled with goods - including Rick's watch and Daryl's beloved crossbow, before being confronted by the Terminus' mother figure, Mary. After a struggle Carol manages to overpower her, leading Mary to confess.

It's hard not to feel sorry for Mary when she gets emotional, telling Carol about their experiences being attacked and raped before stating 'You're either the butcher, or you're the cattle.' Brr, chills anyone? Rather than give in to Mary's demands to kill her, Carol opens a door and leaves her to be walker meat.

Meanwhile Tyreese is looking out of the cabin window at approaching walkers feeling all sad and sorry for himself, giving the annoying Martin chance to move and hold Judith hostage before ordering Tyreese outside. Big mistake bud, you just unleashed the Hulk. Martin looks around as the walkers suddenly grow quiet outside, creating tension before Tyreese breaks down the door and does some serious damage. About time.

The people still locked up seem to think that now is the perfect time to quiz Eugene on the 'cure'. He tells them all that he was part of a team that fought 'fire with fire', and tells them that if he could get to DC he may be able to reverse the outbreak. So nothing too difficult then?

They're eventually broken out and start to do some serious carnage in their escape - all the while annoying little Carl is wearing that annoying little hat. I'm sorry, I really don't like him - can you tell? After escaping Rick chillingly tells the survivors that they're going back to finish them off - what happened to wanting to save some of your humanity in front of your son Rick?

They're even reunited with Carol, in shock and awe that she managed to save them. Seems that all is forgiven (for now anyway), and she leads them to Tyreese and Judith. Incoming emotional music. Joking aside, it's quite an emotional scene and a refreshingly upbeat ending to the first episode of the fifth season. Everyone is reunited and happy (as can be, anyway), but nobody seems to bring up the possibility that Beth is still alive and out there somewhere??

Heading back up the tracks, Rick scribbles over the sanctuary signs, replacing it with the episodes title; 'No Sanctuary.' But of course it's not like the producers to leave us with such a happy ending - we go back to when the people at Terminus we're captives, with Gareth stating 'you're either the butcher, or the cattle.' What a lovely note to end on.

Post credits scene: There is actually a scene after the 'next time on TWD', which I completely missed the first time around! In it, a figure walks up to the sign Rick changed in the last scene and pauses before removing his mask, revealing himself to be none other than Morgan! I'm personally excited by this - I feel like so much more can be done with his character and I'm glad the writers have picked this back up.

Next time on TWD: We're given a few insights into next weeks episode, with what looks to be a promising new antagonist dubbing himself 'the sinner'. The group seems to seek sanctuary in a church, where they come across this new character. Remember I mentioned above that Beth was abducted in a black car? Well said black car was actually decorated with a Cross - could this new antagonist be the driver of the car that kidnapped Beth? I hope we get to see her soon!

All in all, the first episode was a fantastic way to bring back such a well loved series. It was action packed and full of emotion, not to mention some loose ends which will eventually come about! After all, the last we see of Gareth he is only shot in the shoulder by Rick. Could him and his cannibalistic family make a come back later in the series? I certainly hope so - this was such an interesting storyline I'd hate to see it reduced to having just one episode.
